Counter-Strike 2 Officially Announced, Launching in Summer 2023 as a Free CS:GO Update
Touted as the successor to Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, Counter-Strike 2 is slated for release this summer. Built on Valve’s Source 2 engine, the game is being called “the most significant technical advance in the history of Counter-Strike.”
As part of the update, players can expect better graphical resolution, support for sub-tick updates, and changes to core gameplay. It is offered as a free update to CS:GO.
Currently, the game is being offered in beta, which Valve calls a “limited test.” However, it is limited to certain players.
Valve states in a Steam FAQ post: “Players are selected based on a number of factors deemed important by the Counter-Strike 2 development team, including (but not limited to) recent play time on official Valve servers, trust factor, and Steam account reputation.”
The upcoming game will feature dynamic smokes, where Smoke Grenades act as dynamic volumetric entities that interact with the environment and react to lighting, gunfire, and explosions. In addition, Valve has solved the infamous tick rate problem by introducing subtick updates, which allow game servers to recognize the exact moment when a movement starts, a shot is fired, or a grenade is thrown. This ensures that your movements and shots are equally responsive, and grenades will always land in the same way regardless of stick frequency.
In addition, the game also features revamped maps capable of bringing the CS:GO inventory to Counter-Strike 2, audio updates, and better UI and visual effects with Source 2 lighting and particle systems.
Early rumors about Counter-Strike 2 picked up steam when esports journalist Richard Lewis revealed that CS:GO could move to the Source 2 engine as early as this month.
