Tech Companies Require Employees to Return to the Office
The pandemic is indeed over. Companies that have resorted to remote and hybrid work setups are slowly moving back to the old habits of having people come into the office every week. The technology industry is in the biggest hurry to get employees back to work so they don’t log in their diaries from a mountain station or a beach.
These companies aren’t just based in India, we’re talking about some of the biggest names in tech that are making people change the way they work or face serious consequences. Most brands started informing their employees about the changes at the end of 2023, but now it has come into full effect. Here is a summary of companies that have made office work mandatory for their employees.
Google reportedly changed its hybrid work policy in 2023, requiring employees to be in the office at least three days a week. According to a new report, Google will monitor employee attendance and take action against those who do not comply with the new requirements. Google’s HR chief Fiona Cicconi recently wrote an email to employees that included doubling down on office involvement. Telecommuting is only an option in exceptional cases, which is another way of saying you don’t have it anymore.
Meta
Google wasn’t the only tech giant to issue an order. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, received a similar order for its employees to work from the office three days a week. It also warned workers that those who don’t make it to the office could lose their jobs. The email was sent to Meta employees by Lori Goler, the company’s “head of people.” “Beginning September 5th, people assigned to the office must spend at least 3 days per week in person to promote healthy relationships and strong collaboration,” an excerpt from the letter read.
TCS
TCS is a technology company based in India that recently changed its policy to require employees to work in the office all five days or their reviews and hikes will suffer. TCS seems to have caved in with the work-from-office order and it seems that the policy is the same for all divisions, giving everyone a “final warning” of their decision. Such big changes could force some workers to seek pastures new if the policy doesn’t work for them.
HCL Tech
HCL makes it a little easier for their employees and asks them to come to the office three days a week. Even HCL is asking all its employee groups to follow the new policy that will come into effect on February 19, which is just a few days away. The HR message quoted in the media suggests that HCL’s message does not have a warning tone, but merely informs employees of the inevitable changes.
Amazon
Amazon is another global tech giant that discourages remote work or even hybrid work. The company also wants its employees to work from home at least three days a week, or else they risk their chances of promotion.
Infosys
And finally, we have another Indian tech company in the form of Infosys, which also wants its workforce to come into the office for at least 10 days a month, roughly 3 days a week.
