Elon Musk and experts call for suspension of training of AI systems that can surpass GPT-4
Elon Musk and a group of AI experts and industry leaders are calling for a six-month pause in training systems more powerful than GPT-4, they said in an open letter citing potential risks to society and humanity.
The letter, published by the nonprofit Future of Life Institute and signed by more than 1,000 people, including Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak and Stability AI CEO Emad Mostaque, called for a halt to advanced AI development until safety protocols for such are shared. plans were developed, implemented and audited by independent experts.
“Efficient artificial intelligence systems should only be developed when we are sure that their effects are positive and their risks are manageable,” the letter states.
The letter also detailed the potential risks to society and civilization of AI systems competing with humans in the form of economic and political disruption, and urged developers to work with policy makers, government and regulatory authorities.
The letter came as EU police force Europol on Monday joined the ranks of ethical and legal concerns over advanced artificial intelligence like ChatGPT in warning of the system’s potential abuse for phishing, disinformation and cybercrime.
Since its launch last year, Microsoft-backed OpenAI’s ChatGPT has prompted competitors to launch similar products and companies to integrate it or similar technologies into their apps and products.
