Concerned about malware and phishing attacks? Chrome now alerts you before accessing a website.
Google is improving the level of protection for Chrome users, and its latest efforts aim to protect you from potential malware attacks and warn you about phishing attempts. Google calls it Browsing Protection, which speaks for itself and the support it provides. The new tool is available for Chrome users on the web and iOS devices, and Android users will likely get it in the coming weeks.
Google often makes strong claims about its security, so how does the new tool differ from previous iterations? Here’s an in-depth look at a Chrome feature coming to millions of users this month.
Google Browsing Protection: What is it?
Browsing protection has been around for a while, but Google claims it has improved its level of protection, now focusing on phishing and malware attacks and alerting users to potential intrusions through certain websites you visit. Google basically uses its archive of malicious sites and tracks whether you’ve visited any of them recently. The company claims to have been able to block around 25 percent of phishing attempts. Real-time monitoring is more effective than the previous focus on warning of malicious sites on the device.
How does Google warn you about dangerous sites?
Google has tweaked its tracking mechanism with real-time functionality, and the process seems quite complicated but effective. Google says that when a person visits a website, Chrome quickly checks its security through its cache. It also checks the security of the website in real time by sending the URL to the privacy server.
From now on, Google will use the website’s detailed information and share the information in an encrypted form with the Browsing protection server. Now the server connects the website to its database and alerts if it finds any concerns.
You might think that a long process can affect the loading time of a website, especially if it logs out. However, Google assures that its real-time checks take place in the background and between the person visiting the website, and after being warned about potential threats, the whole process does not take much time.
