Italy sets a deadline for OpenAI to meet ChatGPT’s privacy requirements
Italy’s data protection agency on Wednesday set OpenAI an end-of-April deadline to meet data protection and privacy requirements to allow its AI ChatGPT chatbot service to continue in the country.
On March 31, Microsoft-backed OpenAI took ChatGPT offline in Italy after an agency called Garante temporarily restricted it and opened an investigation into a suspected violation of privacy rules.
The Italian agency accused OpenAI of failing to verify the age of ChatGPT users and criticized the “absence of any legal basis” that would justify the massive collection and storage of personal data.
In a statement on Wednesday, Garante laid out a series of “concrete” demands that must be met by the end of this month.
“Only in this case will the authority suspend the temporary restrictions on access to Italian users’ data … and ChatGPT will become available again in Italy,” it said.
Italy was the first Western European country to oppose OpenAI, but the rapid development of the technology has attracted the attention of lawmakers and regulators in several countries.
Many experts say new regulations are needed to govern AI because it could affect national security, employment and education.
