Sam Altman to Tour India to Discuss AI

Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT and founder of OpenAI, is scheduled to visit India this week as part of his tour of five countries, including Israel, Jordan, Qatar, the UAE, India, and South Korea. Reports suggest that Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, will meet Altman during his visit. Altman’s visit coincides with India’s preparations for its Digital India framework, which will replace the current IT Act and establish guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the digital realm.

It has been confirmed that he will be speaking at IIIT Delhi and registrations for the takkachat session are already closed. Just a few days ago, Altman tweeted, “Excited to visit Israel, Jordan, Qatar, UAE, India and South Korea this week!”

Interestingly, IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar has expressed his views on AI regulation last month and also spoke about the creator of ChatGPT.

“Sam Altman is clearly an intelligent man. He has his own ideas about how artificial intelligence should be regulated. We certainly believe that we have smart brains in India as well, and we have our own views on how AI should have guardrails,” Chandrasekhar said.

The growing popularity of ChatGPT

Since its debut in November 2022, ChatGPT has experienced a strong rise, becoming the fastest app in the world to reach 100 million users in just 2 months. ChatGPT has shocked the world with its capabilities, but has also sparked arguments about AI safeguards. There have been several arguments debating whether ChatGPT does more harm than good, and tech moguls such as Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and former Google CEO Eric Schmidt have all expressed concern about this rapid rise of AI.

A recent case has only added to the concerns that OpenAI’s ChatGPT was used to cheat civil service exams in Telangana, India, which may be one of the first cases in the country where AI has been used for cheating purposes.
