Sam Altman Discusses AI Safety During Visit to India
Sam Altman, the creator of ChatGPT, is currently on a six-country tour that includes India. However, concerns have been growing around the capabilities of ChatGPT and the need for safeguards around artificial intelligence. Recent cases of cheating in civil service exams in Telangana, India, and in the US have only added to these concerns. ChatGPT has shocked the world with its abilities, but also sparked debates about the ethical use of AI.
The founder of OpenAI is expected to meet Prime Minister Modi and other senior officials of the country today, June 8. Speaking about the paradigm shift created by AI and its impact on the global socio-economic scenario, Altman said: The thing that might be different is the speed at which (the change) is happening. It requires a change in the socio-economic contract and the way governments think (disruption).
Apart from meeting government officials, Altman is also speaking at an event hosted by IIIT Delhi today, and registrations for the fireside chat session have already closed and people are eager to hear about the background of ChatGPT.
AI regulations
Altman’s visit to India comes at a time when the country is preparing the Digital India framework, which will replace the current IT Act and set safeguards for the use of artificial intelligence and the digital space. Altman acknowledges India’s role as president of the G20 group, and according to Bloomberg, India can play a key role in shaping global AI regulations.
However, OpenAI’s CEO disagreed about the danger posed by artificial intelligence. “I don’t think current AI systems are dangerous. GPT4 doesn’t pose an existential risk, but (it) could be a completely different thing,” Altman said.
