Mark Zuckerberg Dismisses Apple’s Vision Pro Headset as Not Being a ‘Magical Solution’
Despite the recent unveiling of Apple’s Vision Pro mixed-reality headset at WWDC 2023, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains unfazed.
As reported by The Verge, Meta, one of Apple’s biggest competitors in this field, held an internal meeting where Zuckerberg assured employees that Apple’s Vision Pro was nothing new — that Meta hadn’t already researched, and that there aren’t some kind of magic solutions. which they have to the limitations of the laws of physics.”
Zuckerberg dismissed the headset as high-end hardware that “makes sense for the cases they’re going for.” He said Apple went with a high-resolution screen and powerful internals, but this results in the headset having a power supply and cord, calling it a “design compromise.”
Meta’s vision is said to be “basically social,” and the company is focused on making sure they target the mass market with affordable headphones that more people can use. The Verge further notes that Zuckerberg also acknowledged that Meta’s upcoming Quest 3 VR headset will be significantly cheaper than Apple’s $3,499 Vision Pro, at just $499 — and will help the company reach a wider user base.
While Mark Zuckerberg may have ditched the headset for now, it’s worth noting that Apple’s announcement of the Vision Pro “spatial computer” headset marks the first major threat to Meta’s Metaverse ambitions, where it plans to build a “basic social” world through headsets. such as Meta Quest 3 and the top-of-the-line Meta Quest Pro.
