Tesla Offers Limited-Time Opportunity to Upgrade to Full Self-Driving

Tesla is now informing its customers that they have the option to transfer the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature they bought to a different vehicle, as long as they receive the new vehicle within the next three months. This announcement was made by Elon Musk during the company’s Q2 2023 investor call, where he introduced a “one-time amnesty” that permits owners to transfer their FSD. A Twitter user named Keith Dahlenburg has shared a screenshot of the offer, including its regulations and requirements, through Not A Tesla App, The Verge.

Perhaps the most relevant condition is that owners can only take advantage of this one-time amnesty if they take delivery of a new Tesla vehicle between July 20 and September 30, 2023. It cannot be applied retroactively, so those who received the delivery before and after will unfortunately have to pay again for the right to use it. And the FSD isn’t cheap—Tesla raised its price to $15,000 last year. That’s a huge price hike for early adopters who were able to snag the feature for $5,000 a year ago. Now they can get a new model without having to pay for the feature again.

Owners who choose the transfer offer will lose the capability of their current vehicle. Tesla removes the FSD from their old EV up to a week before the scheduled delivery date and they can’t get it back even if they cancel their new car purchase. However, Tesla does not guarantee delivery by the end of the campaign, so owners can still miss out on the offer if their deliveries are unfortunately delayed.
