Animated Movie Adaptation of Cyberpunk Adventure Game Stray Announced
Annapurna, the publisher behind the successful animated film Nimona, is now working on an animated movie adaptation of the popular cat-themed adventure game Stray. The film is currently in active development, with the creative team yet to be revealed. Robert Baird, the head of Annapurna Animation, expressed his excitement, stating that it will be the most hopeful and inspiring movie ever made.
Baird defines “silverpunk” as a narrative concept that holds optimism against tyranny as resistance. This almost describes the emotional atmosphere of the game, so Annapurna is on the right track. It’s also been confirmed that the game’s companion drone, the B-12, will be a big part of the film, which Baird says is a “buddy comedy about a cat and a robot” and appeals to the pair’s “fun”.
The original game was released last year and put players in control of a curious cat in a cyberpunk landscape. There’s a lot of platforming, stealth-based traversal, and meowing. The title was praised for giving players a cat-level perspective on the world, and has been a huge hit on almost every platform.
As far as Annapurna is concerned, the film Stray is just another step in its plans to dominate Hollywood. The company’s animation division announced a few more films and teased a lot more. Chris Wedge, creator of Ice Age , is directing the film, called FOO, short for fish out of water, and Nimona co-director Nick Bruno has signed on to helm the untitled project, which has been described only as “high concept” and “Spielbergian.” .”
The company also teased that other games under its umbrella could get the film treatment, stating that Stray was chosen as the first adaptation because it was “wildly popular”. Other titles on the publisher’s slate include the time-loop thriller Twelve Minutes starring Daisy Ridley and James McAvoy, the pre-Starfield sci-fi Outer Wilds, the narrative mystery Kentucky Route Zero and many more. Any of these would make a decent movie.
