Apple CEO Tim Cook shares his vision for AR/VR ahead of WWDC 2023

Apple is rumored to be developing a headset that combines augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) into one piece of hardware. The company has not shared any details about this product and its possible launch, but according to the recent views of Apple CEO Tim Cook, the date is probably not far off.

Cook has hinted at Apple’s focus on mixed reality (XR), which combines AR and VR, but he doesn’t think XR will isolate people, it’s about the individual experience. Cook has shared his views in an interview with GQ recently, and he believes that FaceTime is an ideal use for the XR, where people can not only chat but also collaborate on different projects.

Apple has been working on XR headphones for a while, but it’s been delayed mostly because the company was never convinced of its use case. But with 5G networks offering high data transfer speeds, this must be an ideal moment for Apple to take charge and demonstrate the virtue of the XR with its rumored products. Cook has had mixed views on AR, especially since Google was first on the scene with Google Glass and he didn’t see the product succeeding for a variety of reasons.

But there’s definitely been a quick turnaround in his opinion, which he credits to Steve Jobs, who advised him to never be afraid to do a 180 on opinions when you have proof of a case. Apple has changed its position over the years, and one of the top 180 has to be a company launching large-screen iPhones, which would never have happened with Jobs. But Apple had evidence that larger iPhones were successful with other companies easily changing market trends.

Apple has confirmed the dates for WWDC 2023 in June this year, and according to varying reports, the company doesn’t have a product in the flesh, but it would definitely talk about its plans and the software that will power the device.

Production of Apple XR headphones has been delayed until the end of 2023, which means the hardware may not hit the market until mid-2024. Apple is likely to charge as much as $3,000 (roughly Rs. 2.43 lakh) for the device, which is in line with Cook’s vision for AR and where he sees the product fitting into the early years of the segment. Either way, we’re excited to see when and how Apple plans to bring its XR headset to market.
