Apple’s iPhone Software Update for iOS 18 May Be the Largest Yet
The topic of iOS updates has been a constant source of debate, with many arguing that Apple is trying to stick to a familiar formula and offer an experience that is largely identical to its predecessor, with a few added features.
That may soon change, however, based on what Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reports in PowerOn‘s subscriber-only section. iOS 18, which follows the current version of iOS 17, is expected to be a major overhaul. Gurman said he expects iOS 18 to be the “biggest” software update in iPhone history.
“I’ve been told that the new operating system is seen within the company as one of the biggest iOS updates — if not the biggest — in the company’s history,” Gurman said.
First, the new iOS update is expected to double down on generative use cases with AI, and Siri is making a big difference. In fact, The Information previously reported that Apple could integrate the Large Language Model into Siri, which in turn would make it capable of solving advanced tasks.
In addition to the main AI-driven features, iOS 18, which is said to be codenamed “crystal”, could have a lot more to offer, including a new auto-generated playlist in Apple Music and even the possible introduction of RCS messages.
Yes, RCS has long been coming to iPhones, and the Cupertino-based tech giant has already announced that RCS support will come to iPhones in 2024. It could be possible that the iOS 18 version will bring support the same as it launches in addition to the iPhone 16 series phones later this year .
However, the extent of this update is expected to be revealed at Apple’s WWDC 2024 event in June. Here, not only do we see the release of the first developer beta, but Apple is also delving into features, with a particular focus on artificial intelligence this year.
