Apple Maps is now accessible on the web in beta version.

Apple Maps is now accessible on the web, following in the footsteps of Google Maps. The service is currently in beta mode, offering users a new way to access its features beyond the app.

There are currently some restrictions. Availability varies by region, and Maps will initially only be available online in English. Currently, you can access Apple Maps from Safari and Chrome on Mac and iPad. Windows PC users can access the service through Chrome and Edge. Apple says it will expand the online experience to other languages, devices and browsers over time, but for now at least, iPhone users will have to continue using the Maps app.

The online version of Apple Maps includes directions; guides; opening hours, reviews and other useful information for businesses; and functions such as ordering food. Apple will add more features in the coming months, including Look Around (aka the company’s version of Street View).

After years of being limited to the Maps app, Apple may be trying to take on Google at its own game. For example, Google Maps has long allowed developers to embed map elements on websites. Apple says developers can link it to maps online to provide users with driving directions, location information and more.

Expanding beyond the app is a smart idea and could help Apple Maps reach more eyeballs. The company also started offering an online version of Apple Music several years ago.
