Apple may consider having Foxconn assemble iPads in India due to iPhone success: Here’s what we know so far

Foxconn, the manufacturer of Apple products, is considering expanding its business in India by potentially assembling iPads at its Sriperumbudur unit in Tamil Nadu. Over the past few years, Foxconn has increased investments in developing manufacturing facilities in southern states and expanding its operations in the country.

According to a recent report by the Economic Times, Foxconn is likely to begin assembling iPads at its Sriperumbudur plant, located in the immediate vicinity of Chennai in Tamil Nadu. According to information, the company has already started discussions with the government about the plan. “Their track record so far has been very good and they are coming full circle. They will double what they have in the next few years, including iPhone, iPads and some other products,” ET reported citing an unnamed source.

Manufacturing the iPad in Indian factories is very possible, as it requires similar capabilities to those used to assemble smartphones. However, Apple may take longer to assemble its flagship MacBook laptops due to their lower production volumes.

Foxconn is planning huge investments in India

Foxconn is expected to benefit largely from India’s Production Linked Incentives [PLI] as it is making huge investments in India. Apple is reportedly starting to look for a manufacturing partner to develop iPad models in India. In addition to iPads, the company plans to increase production of components for wireless AirPods charging cases from Jabil’s factory in India. Currently, technology companies Pegatron and Tata Electronics are Apple’s main suppliers in India.

Apple’s latest plan to expand the assembly of various products in India can be seen as part of the company’s strategy to diversify production locations in several countries. Last year, the technology giant moved part of the production of the iPad to Vietnam. Most recently, the company announced plans to open a new research lab at its Shenzhen facility in China to test the quality of its upcoming iPhones and iPads under extreme conditions.
