Arm introduces new smartphone technology and MediaTek is ready to use it
Arm Ltd introduced a new chip technology for mobile devices on Monday, and Taiwanese smartphone chipmaker MediaTek said it will use it in its next-generation product.
MediaTek, a longtime supplier of low-end and mid-range smartphone chips, has been pushing the market to supply premium smartphone chips once dominated by rival Qualcomm Inc, which has been locked in a legal battle with Armi over licensing of the chip since last year. contracts.
In Armi’s blog about the new products, MediaTek said the new chips will help improve the performance of its next-generation smartphones.
Arm sells schematics that chip designers use to build their own hardware. It will launch the Immortalis-G720, a chip for processing video images and artificial intelligence applications, and the Cortex-X4, the processor that will become the brain of the mobile device, at the Computex conference in Taiwan.
Both new chips have 15% better performance than previous generations, Arm said, and Cortex-X4 uses 40% less power, which is key for smartphones that need long battery life.
Arm also said it has “registered” the Cortex-X4 with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co., Ltd., meaning it has a factory-built chip, an expensive process usually done by chip designers who sell off-the-shelf chips .
When asked by Reuters at a briefing whether the tape that came off the tape meant that Arm was making chips to sell, rather than having long been in its business model to offer a plan to chipmakers, Chris Berge, Arm’s head of customer business, said there was a move. Sometimes it is needed to help test new manufacturing technology for customers.
Arm doesn’t sell chips. He said, We’re not doing this.
The Financial Times reported last month that Arm was developing its own chip to showcase the features of its design.
Arm said the Cortex-X4 was patented in the TSMC N3E process and said it was an industry first.
