Beware of Fake E-Challan Scams: Safeguard Your Money and Identity
India has been grappling with a disturbing surge in cybercrime, as cybercriminals persistently devise fresh and inventive ways to trick unsuspecting citizens. Of particular concern is the widespread occurrence of fraudulent e-challan scams, which exploit people’s anxieties about traffic infractions by demanding payments for offenses that were never committed. The Information Security Awareness (ISEA) division of MeitY has issued an alert regarding this escalating menace.
The authorities’ alert recently shared on social media emphasizes the need for vigilance. It says: “Beware! If you get a link to a traffic challenge, don’t click on those links.” The post also reminds people, “Don’t fall for the fake E-Challan scam! Your security is your responsibility,” while highlighting the potential risks of clicking on fraudulent links, such as account hacking.
Understand E-Challan Scam
The e-challan scam exploits the legitimate e-challan system used by the traffic police all over India. Legitimate e-challans are issued to vehicle owners who violate traffic rules and are notified via SMS or email. However, fraudsters manipulate this system by sending false messages demanding payments for fictitious violations. Cybercriminals send genuine e-challan messages to unsuspecting victims and falsely accuse them of traffic violations. These messages often contain payment links or instructions for settling fines. Falling for this scam can lead to financial losses and possible identity theft.
ISEA has provided an example of a fake e-challan message: “Your challan number is 348915784195032 for PB08DJ8182 with total challan amount of Rs.500. For online challan payment visit https://echallanparivahan.in/. Also contact RTO office to dispose of the challan. Regards, RTO.” This link is fraudulent where unsuspecting victims’ bank accounts can be compromised.
The genuine link for e-challan payments is: https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/. To protect yourself, always take precautions when receiving such messages. Do a quick Google search to verify the authenticity of the link.
Stay safe from fake E-Challan scams
Two crucial factors can help you identify genuine e-challan messages:
1. Check the URL: Make sure the URL contains “gov.in” which indicates that it is a government website. For example, the authentic e-challan link is https://echallan.parivahan.gov.in/.
2. Vehicle details: Reasoned e-challan messages should contain vehicle specific details like engine and chassis numbers. Fraudsters often omit these important identifiers.
Faced with the growing threat of fake e-challan scams, your vigilance and awareness are your best protection. Stay informed, be careful when receiving such messages, and take the necessary steps to protect your finances and personal information. Your safety is in your hands.
