Bluesky Social, led by Jack Dorsey, surpasses 4 million users within a day, adding 800k new users.

After a year of being exclusive to invited users, Jack Dorsey’s Bluesky Social has finally opened its doors to the public, and it is generating a lot of interest. The rise of decentralized platforms, fueled by dissatisfaction with the numerous changes implemented on X (formerly Twitter) under Elon Musk’s leadership, has contributed to this growing popularity. Despite being in a beta stage with limited invitations, Bluesky Social experienced a significant surge in users, reaching 2 million in November 2023. Now that it is available to the public without the need for an invite, users are flocking to Bluesky Social.

The number of Bluesky Social users is increasing

According to publicly available data, Bluesky Social received 800,000 users (or “news”) on its first day. The microblogging platform crossed the 4 million user mark for the first time and currently has over 4.2 million users. This despite the fact that there were interruptions for the audience on the first day. Bluesky CEO Jay Graber admitted that the platform experienced “intermittent power outages” but the issues appear to have been resolved.

What is Bluesky Social?

BlueSky Social is a decentralized social media application developed by Twitter co-founder Jack Dorsey. Jay Graber serves as CEO. The platform is built using an open source framework using the proprietary AT protocol, which is a transparent network that allows users to see how it’s built and what’s being developed.

The app’s “decentralized” platform means that all data is stored on independent servers instead of company-owned servers. In addition, users can create their own servers and switch to them without losing any data, according to Graber.

How is it different from X?

The main difference between BlueSky Social and X is moderation. The social media platform has aggregated moderation practices with the help of third-party service providers. While it uses an automatic filtering system, the platform also allows for community tagging, allowing users to tag things manually. There is a fear in many quarters that this will promote misinformation on the platform.
