‘Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix’ from Netflix is a Tribute to the ’90s Through Anime
Today, Ubisoft released a teaser trailer for Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix, an upcoming Netflix anime. The show draws inspiration from the 2013 Blood Dragon expansion for Far Cry 3, but it seems to be a playful blend of Ubisoft’s intellectual property and the nostalgia of the early 90s.
Series creator Adi Shankar (producer of Netflix’s Castlevania series) presented the trailer in a campy cyborg appropriate to the source material. “Seven years ago, I got a call from Ubisoft offering me the opportunity to adapt one of their very, very serious series into anime,” Shankar said. “But instead, I came back to them with a crazy concept inspired by the atmosphere of Far Cry 3: Blood Dragon. This concept took Ubisoft’s vast library of characters and blended them into one spoof anime series that would become this love letter to the 90s… or at least how I remembered the 90s chapter.”
The series is set in 1992, but it’s an alternate universe where the United States has fallen and been replaced by a nation called Eden, with strong Orwellian vibes. “Super soldier Dolph Laserhawk has just been let down by the love of his life and has been locked up in Eden’s high-security Supermaxx prison,” Ubisoft explains. “He must now lead a group of rebel outcasts on risky undercover missions in order to survive.”
Shankar describes the series as violent, dystopian fiction in the vein of Aldous Huxley, as well as spoof, satire, dark comedy, love story and “the most philosophically aware show you’ve seen in a long time”. Bobbypills Studio is responsible for the animation.
Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix premieres worldwide on Netflix this fall. You can watch the “Easter Egg Filled” teaser trailer below.
