Every year May 17th is celebrated as World Telecommunication and Information Society Day. “#WorldTelecomDay2023| To mark World Telecom Day i.e. 17th May @DoT_India launches citizen-centric portal ‘Sanchar Saathi’. #WTD2023 #SancharSaathi #DIU #TAFCOP #CEIR,” DoT wrote on Twitter.
This is how the Sanchar Saathi portal works
– The Sanchar Saathi portal, an initiative of the Ministry of Telecom, aims to empower mobile phone subscribers by improving their security and creating awareness about government initiatives.
– It provides various modules including CEIR (Central Equipment Identity Register) to track and block lost/stolen devices across all telecom networks.
– The TAFCOP (Telecom Analytics for Fraud Management and Consumer Protection) module allows users to check the number of mobile connections in their name and report unnecessary or unauthorized connections
– In addition, the portal offers up-to-date information and material about end-user safety, telecommunications and information security.
– In addition to tracking lost devices, the portal offers users the opportunity to access their SIM card numbers and prevent unauthorized use.
– This feature allows owners to take immediate action if someone else is using their SIM card.
Recently, the Indian government introduced a new requirement to disclose the 15-digit IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers of mobile devices before they are sold. This measure aims to prevent unauthorized mobile phones from accessing the network.
Telecom companies and the CEIR system get access to the IMEI number and the associated mobile phone number. This information is already used in some states to track lost or stolen mobile devices through the CEIR system.
