Chinese Firms Huawei and Alibaba Seek Approval for Deepfake Technology
Chinese technology companies, including Huawei and Alibaba, have submitted 110 applications to China’s cyberspace regulator seeking approvals for models capable of manipulating visual and audio data.
According to a list released by China’s Cyberspace Administration (CAC) on Friday, the companies are seeking approvals to comply with rules established by the CAC in December governing the use of deep counterfeiting technology.
This approval process is separate from the CAC’s regulation of Chinese tech companies looking to displace generative artificial intelligence (AI) products, which have been in high demand since the success of US-based OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Five Chinese tech companies, including Baidu Inc and SenseTime Group, launched AI chatbots to the public on Thursday after receiving government approval.
Unlike chatbots, which generate entirely new text, images, and audio based on user prompts, deep fakes use artificial intelligence technology to create visual and audio data that is virtually indistinguishable from the original and can easily be used for manipulation or misinformation.
