Creators of ‘Cowboy Bebop’ and ‘John Wick’ Developing New Series for Adult Swim
According to Variety, Adult Swim has joined forces with Shinichirō Watanabe, the director and creator of the beloved anime series Cowboy Bebop, for an upcoming sci-fi anime series infused with jazz. The animation for the new series, titled Lazarus, will be handled by MAPPA, the renowned studio responsible for popular shows like Chainsaw Man, Zombie Land Saga, and later seasons of Attack on Titan. Watanabe will not be working alone, as he will be collaborating with Chad Stahelski, the brilliant mind behind the action-packed John Wick franchise, to co-create thrilling action sequences.
This is a Watanabe joint, so expect plenty of jazzy visuals and audio cues. To that end, Lazarus features music from jazz and electronic artists such as Kamasi Washington, Floating Points, and Bonobo.
So what is it about? Set in the near future, Lazarus follows an explosives team chasing a mad scientist to prevent a mass poisoning incident. There’s no release date yet, but the creators will release more information, including a first-look trailer, at the annual Adult Swim Festival this weekend. It is worth noting that many of the events planned for this festival have been canceled due to the ongoing writers’ and actors’ strikes.
As for Netflix’s second Cowboy Bebop, Watanabe told Forbes that the live-action version will not be Cowboy Bebop. It doesn’t matter, though, because Netflix dropped the cancellation hammer on the show in late 2021.
