Cyberpunk 2077 game sales reach 13 million after refunds
Polish game studio CD Projekt Red sold 13 million copies of its troubled Cyberpunk 2077 game on December 20, a figure that takes into account the number of refund requests the company has received.
The studio’s expected sales update does not include information on the extent of reimbursements, only net sales figures. Cyberpunk 2077 was so plagued by problems that Sony pulled the title off its PlayStation Store while Microsoft offered a full refund to Xbox users.
This figure represents the estimated volume of retail sales across all hardware platforms (taking into account returns submitted by retail customers in physical and digital storefronts), i.e. retail, minus all reimbursement requests e-sent directly to the company, CD Projekt said Tuesday in a regulatory filing.
The sales figure is about half of the 12-month sales forecast in a Bloomberg survey of nine analysts, which was taken before Sony pulled the game from its store. The game had over 8 million pre-orders before the December 10 debut, which sparked an outcry online from gamers frustrated with its poor performance and a drop in CD Projekt’s stock price.
CD Projekt rose 4.6% in Warsaw on Tuesday ahead of the release of the sales update. Since its peak on December 4, the company has lost 40% of its market value, or around 18 billion zloty ($5 billion).
