Destiny 2’s Storyline to Reach its Climax with ‘The Final Shape’ on February 27th
Bungie has announced that Destiny 2: The Final Shape, marking the end of the main Destiny story arc, will be released on February 27th, 2024. Players will be challenged with the crucial mission of preventing The Witness from reshaping the universe, requiring them to venture into the Traveler for salvation. The game promises an intensified narrative, with the confirmed return of Cayde-6, and introduces fresh gameplay mechanics.
At first, being close to a traveler gives you access to new light powers, including some that boost the abilities of nearby players. You’ll also see new weapons like a support rifle that can trade for a healing teammate. Enemies can also use their new powers. The company is also rethinking how it tells stories with The Final Shape — instead of four seasons, you’ll see three big episodes broken up into smaller plays. There could be a stronger incentive to stick around as the story progresses, in other words.
Bungie remains committed to completing the current phase and kicking off the witch season this week. In it, Eris Morn takes on the characteristics of the Hive in order to survive a growing threat. There are a few new systems that improve your abilities, and you can even craft hard-to-obtain exotic weapons after unlocking them during missions.
Season 23 (i.e. the season starting in November) facilitates the realization of cooperation events. There’s a separate Fireteam Finder that finds friends for a mission, and everyone can level up to the Light level of the most advanced player on the team.
Final Shape may not be the end of Destiny 2. However, it ties up many of the loose ends that have emerged since 2014. It also reflects Bungie’s determination to develop its brand – it has bypassed Destiny to produce the Marathon follow-up and other projects.
