Details of Cyberattacks Faced by Over 30 Percent of Indian Users in 2023

Nearly two in five (33 percent) internet users in India will face some form of internet-born cyber attack in 2023, a new report revealed on Thursday.

According to the global cyber security company Kaspersky, a total of 62,574,546 cyber threats via the Internet were detected and prevented in the country.

“As the world moves towards artificial intelligence and other next-generation technologies, we expect fraud and scam scenarios to become more complex and challenging to detect. Therefore, we urge Indian users to install security solutions on their devices to protect themselves from these cyberattacks,” said Jaydeep Singh, General Manager, South Asia, Kaspersky.

The report also revealed that cyber-attacks through browsers and social manipulation are the most common methods of online infection.

Cybercriminals often exploit vulnerabilities in browsers and their add-ons to gain access to users’ systems. Users are usually attacked when they visit an infected website. This happens without the user’s awareness or action, and can lead to the download of malicious fileless malware, the researchers explained.

Another popular online threat in India and around the world is “social engineering” to trick users.

In social engineering, a cybercriminal manipulates a user into downloading a malicious file and giving the criminal control over the system.

Cybercriminals often trick their victims into thinking they are downloading a legitimate app or program, and then once the user has downloaded the program, they take control of the victim’s device and use it for malicious purposes.

“Since many threat actors today hide malicious code to bypass static analysis and emulation, advanced technologies such as predictive machine language-based methods and behavioral analysis are used to counter these types of threats,” Singh said.
