‘Dungeon of the Endless’ Roguelike Now Available for Free on Steam
In order to build a substantial fan base for a game’s spiritual successor, it is crucial to ensure that everyone has experienced the original. Sega and Amplitude Studios have taken this approach by offering Dungeon of the Endless for free on Steam prior to the release of its sequel, Endless Dungeon, scheduled for October 19th. Interested players have until July 27th to claim this complimentary game. Additionally, the developers have made both DLC packs available for download through the community hub, with limited availability. It is worth noting that while the older game is compatible with both Mac and PC, it is not compatible with Macs running macOS Catalina or any newer versions.
Dungeon of the Endless attracted attention by combining several game genres, including roguelikes (brutal crawling through dynamically generated dungeons), classic RPGs, team tactics, and tower defense. You lead a team that must defend a crashed spaceship against hordes of enemies while exploring an ever-growing dungeon. None of the elements are particularly complex, but juggling them all can be challenging.
Endless Dungeon is still a hybrid game, but it’s now more of a double shooter, with a gentler “roguelite” progression that allows you to keep some of what you’ve earned every time you fail. It’s also built from the ground up for multiplayer. Although you still lead a group in single player, you can invite two friends to join you. While it’s more accessible, our early play session suggested it was still difficult. It’s available for PC, PS4, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, with a closed beta available in September for Last Wish Edition pre-orders.
