Elderly Man Hit By Car Saved by Apple Watch’s Fall Detection Feature

Apple introduced the Apple Watch’s Fall Detection feature in 2018, at the same time the Apple Watch Series 4 was launched. Since its release, this feature has continuously garnered attention for its life-saving features.

The feature has once again proven its effectiveness by playing a key role in saving an 82-year-old man who was hit by a car in the UK. According to the Shropshire Star newspaper (via AppleInsider ), the elderly man received an Apple Watch as a Christmas present, and it proved instrumental in his life-saving experiment.

The incident occurred on January 19, 2024 at a roundabout in Kidderminster, UK, where Tony Jauncey crossed the road and collided with a driver in the wrong lane. The impact caused the man to break his collarbone, crack his ribs and bruises. Immediately after the crash, his Apple Watch triggered an alert to emergency services.

Tony Jauncey recalls the incident: “I was walking back to my car which was parked at Aldi and was crossing the road when I heard a bang.” He continued: “The next thing I saw was the bumper of the car in front of me… I was lying on the road, I couldn’t move.”

Jauncey said his Apple Watch detected the fall and asked if he wanted to call 911. Although he had the option to cancel, he chose to leave the alert intact, allowing it to automatically call the authorities.
