Electrify America to Offer Tesla’s NACS Connector by 2025
By 2025, Electrify America, Volkswagen’s charging network, has committed to incorporating the widely embraced North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector. This move will significantly enhance the availability of the NACS connector, initially developed by Tesla and known as the Tesla charging connector.
For those tied to the company’s CCS-1 plug standard, don’t worry. Electrify America says it won’t go anywhere because the NACS connectors join the charging station’s CCS-1 connectors, not replace them. Sister organization Electrify Canada will also implement the NACS connector by 2025. The company says this change is part of a broader mandate to “support industry-wide standards” and “streamline public charging” options.
The organization has 850 charging stations, totaling more than 4,000 chargers, across the United States and Canada, so this is a big move. In addition, Electrify America has officially joined the consumer advocacy group National Charging Experience Consortium (ChargeX) to help improve charging infrastructure for EV owners.
Electrify America says it will share more information about the transition to NACS connectors in the coming months, as well as future plans to upgrade its charging stations. For example, there are rumors that the parent company Volkswagen may start integrating the NACS standard into its own vehicles, reports Reuters.
It’s been a big couple of months for the charging standard created by Tesla. Polestar just announced the introduction of connectors, and Volvo made the same move. Ford, GM and Rivian have also committed to using Tesla’s technology in North America. SAE International, one of the automotive industry’s main standards bodies, recently announced its support for the plug, officially making NACS connectors the biggest game in town.
