Elon Musk: China Wants to Establish International Guidelines for AI
During a Twitter Space event with Democrat Ro Khanna and Republican Mike Gallagher, billionaire Elon Musk shared that he believes China has shown interest in establishing a collaborative global framework for artificial intelligence. Musk based his statement on conversations he had during his recent visit to China.
“China is definitely interested in working in international cooperation on AI regulation,” Musk said. He added that he has advocated regulation and oversight of artificial intelligence, including during his meetings in China.
The remarks came on the same day Musk launched his long-haunted artificial intelligence startup, xAI, after months of arguing about AI’s potential to “destroy civilization.”
A few weeks ago, Musk traveled to China, where his Tesla electric car company has a factory in Shanghai, and met with the Chinese foreign, trade and industry ministers in Beijing. He also met Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang.
After meeting with officials during his trip to China, Musk said last month that the Chinese government is working to initiate regulations on artificial intelligence in China.
Several governments are considering how to mitigate the dangers of the emerging technology, as investment and consumer interest has increased in recent months following the launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Regulators worldwide have been trying to set rules for the use of generative artificial intelligence, which can create text and images and whose impact has been compared to the Internet.
