Elon Musk Establishes ‘xAI’ Artificial Intelligence Company to Compete with OpenAI’s ChatGPT
Elon Musk has officially launched his highly anticipated artificial intelligence startup, xAI, on Wednesday. He has assembled a team of engineers from major U.S. technology companies, which he aims to rival in his quest to create an alternative to ChatGPT. Musk, who serves as the CEO of Tesla and owns Twitter, will lead the startup. He has consistently expressed his belief that AI development should be halted and regulated.
“Announcing the formation of @xAI to understand reality,” Musk said in a tweet on Wednesday. According to the site, XAI is holding a Twitter Spaces event on July 14. The xAI team includes Igor Babuschkin, a former DeepMind engineer, Tony Wu, who worked at Google, Christian Szegedy, who was also a researcher at Google, and Greg Yang, who was previously at Microsoft.
In March, Musk registered a company called X.AI Corp, which is incorporated in Nevada, according to the state’s filing. According to the company, Musk is the sole director, with Jared Birchall, CEO of Musk’s family office, as secretary.
The billionaire had said in April that he would launch TruthGPT, or maximal truth-seeking artificial intelligence, to compete with Google’s Bard and Microsoft’s Bing AI, which tries to understand the nature of the universe.
Generative AI came into the limelight with the release of OpenAI’s popular chatbot, ChatGPT, which was released in November last year before the release of Bard and Bing AI.
Dan Hendrycks, who advises the xAI team, currently serves as director of the Center for AI Safety, and his work revolves around AI risks. Musk’s new company is separate from X Corp, but will work closely with Twitter, Tesla and other companies, according to the website.
XAI announced that it is recruiting experienced engineers and scientists from the Bay Area.
