Elon Musk-Led X Bans Over 200,000 Accounts in India Last Month – A Big Blow to Social Media Users!

Popular microblogging platform X (formerly Twitter) has banned a record 234,584 accounts in India from September 26 to October 25. Most of these bans were due to the promotion of child sexual abuse and non-consensual nudity.

The Elon Musk-run social media platform also deleted 2,755 accounts for promoting terrorism in the country. In total, X took action against 237,339 accounts during this reporting period in India.

In its monthly report to comply with the new IT rules, 2021, X revealed that it handled 3,229 user complaints in India during the specified period through its complaint redressal mechanisms. In addition, the platform handled 78 complaints related to account suspension complaints.

According to the company, after reviewing the details of the situations, they overturned 43 account bans, while the rest were suspended. In addition, X received 53 requests for general account-related questions during this reporting period.

The majority of complaints from India focused on hate speech (1,424), followed by abuse/harassment (917), child sexual abuse (366) and sensitive adult content (231).

The new IT Rules 2021 require the largest digital and social media platforms with more than 5 million users to publish monthly compliance reports. Between August 26 and September 25, microblogging platform X banned a total of 557,764 accounts in India.

In addition, the platform deleted 1,675 accounts for promoting terrorism in the country.

X has also taken action against more than 325,000 pieces of content that violated its terms of service, including violent speech and hate speech during the war between Israel and Hamas.

Meanwhile, X recently announced two new subscription options for its users on its platform. One of these is the Premium+ tier, which is available for around $16 per month and includes all the tools and features the platform offers minus the ads.

The premium ad-free experience is only for users accessing the platform through a web browser. For those who want a more budget-friendly option, the basic price is $3 per month. however, it does not offer an ad-free experience.
