EU may crack down on Elon Musk’s X due to digital dominance
Elon Musk’s social media platform X may be subject to new European Union regulations that restrict the actions of major technology companies, as the company has indicated it could be covered by the bloc’s Digital Markets Act.
The DMA, which takes effect Thursday, includes a series of dos and don’ts for things like Alphabet Inc’s Google Search, Apple’s Safari, Amazon.com Inc and Meta Platforms Inc’s Facebook. . It could also apply to Musk’s X, Booking Holdings Inc’s accommodation platform and ByteDance Ltd, the European Commission said late on Friday.
The purpose of the DMA is to prevent competition violations by technology companies before they take root. It applies to companies with a significant impact on the EU market with more than 45 million monthly active users and 10,000 business users per year.
According to the rules, it is illegal for certain platforms to favor their own services over competitors’ services. They are prohibited from combining personal data across their various services and are prohibited from using the information they collect from third parties to compete against them, among other prohibitions and obligations.
The Brussels-based watchdog has 45 working days to decide whether X, Booking.com and ByteDance will be included in the rules or not.
X, ByteDance and Booking did not immediately respond to a request for comment outside business hours.
ByteDance previously lost a lawsuit in which it tried to stop the application of the rules.
