What Are the Features of Apple’s New M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max Chipsets?
Cupertino-based tech giant Apple on Tuesday unveiled its three new next-generation chipsets – M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max at its “Scary Fast” launch event. According to the company, these are the first personal computer circuits built with 3 nanometer process technology, which enables more transistors to be packed into a smaller space and improves speed and efficiency.
What is dynamic caching technology?
According to Apple, the M3 chips have a next-generation GPU that is faster and more efficient. It also includes a new technology called Dynamic Caching. Unlike traditional GPUs, dynamic cache reserves hardware local memory usage in real time.
With dynamic caching, each task consumes only the exact amount of memory. It dramatically increases the average GPU utilization, which significantly increases performance in the most demanding professional applications and games.
The brand also claims that rendering speeds are now up to 2.5 times faster than the M1 family of chips. Performance cores and efficiency cores are 30 percent and 50 percent faster than the M1, respectively, and the Neural Engine is 60 percent faster than the Neural Engine on the M1 chips.
Apple brings a new media engine
These three chips also feature a new media engine and now include support for AV1 decoding, providing a more powerful and higher-quality video experience from streaming services. The latest chips bring huge improvements and new features to the new MacBook Pro and iMac.
The next generation CPU in the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max claims to offer improvements in performance and efficiency. Performance cores are up to 30 percent faster than M1 family cores.
The performance cores are also up to 50 percent faster than the M1’s performance cores, so daily tasks are faster than ever, while the system can maximize battery life.
According to Apple, the M3, M3 Pro and M3 Max also feature an improved neural engine that accelerates powerful machine learning (ML) models. The Neural Engine is up to 60 percent faster than the M1 family of chips, further accelerating AI/ML workflows and keeping data on-device for privacy.
“Powerful AI image processing tools like noise reduction and super resolution in Topaz are even faster. Scene editing detection in Adobe Premiere and Smart Conform in Final Cut Pro also increase performance, also brand.
All three chips also feature an advanced media engine that provides hardware acceleration for the most popular video codecs, including H.264, HEVC, ProRes and ProRes RAW.
In addition, the M3 features an 8-core CPU with four performance cores and four efficiency cores, which is up to 35 percent faster than the M1 in terms of CPU performance. And it supports up to 24GB of unified memory. Apple said the M3 Pro and M3 Max will help the new MacBook Pro achieve the longest battery life on a Mac ever, at more than 22 hours.
