Here’s How Future iPhone Models Could Enable Underwater Diving
We have been seeing smartphone OEMs offering waterproof smartphones for quite some time now. However, it is important to note that they are not waterproof and you cannot participate in adventure activities such as underwater diving. Be it Apple, Samsung, or any other leading smartphone manufacturer, none offer a warranty against liquid damage of any kind.
But what if a brand like Apple works on this capability? Yes, this is exactly what Apple could be working on based on the iPhone maker’s patent. Advertised as “underwater mode”, the feature is expected to solve problems that arise when using the phones in wet conditions.
The phone is useless when wet, but bigger physical buttons could be a solution
You may have experienced how your phone or especially your iPhone behaves when it gets wet or if your fingers are wet. Apple aims to solve this by adding more physical buttons and relying less on on-screen menus, according to the filed patent.
Based on the applied for patent, Apple aims to allow the use of underwater space at a depth of up to 40 meters.
The entire patent spans 78 pages and focuses on highlighting how iOS is not ideal for use when the device is wet. In fact, it says current methods are “outdated, time-consuming and ineffective” and simply don’t work.
The Apple Watch Ultra reminds us how this could work
It is noteworthy that Apple already promises similar functions in its flagship smartwatch – the Apple Watch Ultra – and allows its users to take it underwater to a depth of up to 40 meters.
This is a really promising story. If it does make it to mainstream devices, it would enable a whole new set of features that better align with the company’s own adventure-class Apple Watch Ultra. Imagine being able to shoot underwater with no restrictions – that’s exactly the kind of possibility we’re talking about.
