Why does Google CEO Sundar Pichai require 20 phones for work?
Google makes phones, which means the company’s top executives use their competitors’ phones to gauge their performance, design, and more. However, Google CEO Sundar Pichai admitted that he uses more than a couple of phones every day, in fact the actual number might shock you. Speaking in an interview a few years ago, Pichai noted that he uses 20 phones at a time, but for a different reason.
Pichai runs the company that owns Android, which runs on more than 95 percent of devices, but he’s also responsible for several Google products that run on those phones. So for him, it’s about making sure all Google apps like Gmail, Docs and Google Photos work well on phones in all regions.
He talked about constantly switching and trying each new phone, which probably comes with the job. Android is a big part of Google’s mobile business all over the world. While Apple gets all the moolah, Android has built a core user base from the budget to the premium segment.
Google itself manufactures the Pixel line, which is now in its 8th generation, while Apple is in its 15th iteration of the iPhone. Google’s market share with Pixels isn’t remarkable, but its impact on the market is undeniable, and its software approach has made others take notice. Pichai has led Google’s hardware business, which is led by Rick Osterloh and his team of engineers and designers.
Pichai isn’t the only tech executive with more than two phones, and over the years we’ve seen executives from Apple and Microsoft talk about one daily device, which these days is mostly a flip phone.
