Google CEO Sundar Pichai warns that artificial intelligence is deeper than fire or electricity
Alphabet and Google CEO Sundar Pichai has stated that artificial intelligence (AI) will be as important to human history as fire or electricity.
He believes that AI is the most profound technology that humanity is currently working on when it comes to understanding the essence of intelligence and humanity. In a recent interview with CBS’s 60 Minutes, Pichai stated that it was important to make sure AI models don’t just train with engineers.
“I’ve always thought of A.I. as the most profound technology that humanity is working on — more profound than fire or electricity or anything we’ve done before,” Pichai said in an interview that aired Sunday.
He explained that the role of other disciplines is critical in developing robust AI models that are more human-like.
“That’s why I think this development needs to involve not only engineers, but also social scientists, ethicists, philosophers and so on,” he said. Pichai added that questions related to the development of artificial intelligence are not for specific companies to answer. but for society as a whole.
The recent rise of competition in AI, led by the likes of ChatGPT, is prompting tech companies like Google to accelerate the launch of their own products after years of research and development.
Pichai has been making this comparison for the past five years, comparing the pros and cons of AI to the ancient discovery of fire.
While AI has the potential to be far more powerful than anything we’ve ever seen before, Pichai admits there are concerns that need to be addressed. He points out that, like fire, AI can be dangerous and can cause harm.
He emphasizes that the development of artificial intelligence should not be solely the responsibility of engineers, but should also involve social scientists, ethicists, philosophers and other experts.
Pichai believes that society as a whole should answer questions about how to develop artificial intelligence that is beneficial to everyone.
