Google Developing Repair Mode Feature For Android 14 Devices
Google finally understands that people lose all their personal data when they give their phones in for repair, and with Android 14, it wants to stop data loss once and for all.
It seems that the company plans to bring a new option called Repair Mode to phones that come with Android 14 or will receive it in the near future. The ever-reliable tipster Mishaal Rahman has spotted the feature in the AOSP repository this week.
Repair mode ensures that the service center gets your phone running a completely new version of the operating system with a new account that does not have your data that you are afraid of losing. In this mode, all your information is protected and actually locked with your authentication, which no one else can access without your consent.
The best news is that Google isn’t limiting space on Pixel phones. When different phone manufacturers use Android 14 AOSP, they can choose to use Google’s patch mode version of Android 14 or integrate their own tool. It is understood that Pixel phones that can run Android 14 will get this feature first, and it should happen in December this year in the form of the Android 14 QPR1 beta that will be available for Pixel phones.
Google clearly feels the need to implement a simpler process for retrieving data when you send a device in for repair, and the technicians feel that all data needs to be deleted to check and fix the problem. Google also has an app that explains the steps involved in using the still-unfinished Repair Mode, and explains the reason for the December timeline for rolling out the feature in beta.
In any case, it’s likely that with repair mode enabled in Android 14, this process will become less tedious and keep users happy with the data they have on their phone.
