Google Discover Introduces Air Quality Index Data for Android and iOS Users
Google is set to enhance the user experience by introducing a new AQI card in its Discover feature on Android and iOS platforms. This initiative aims to provide real-time air quality data, ensuring individuals have convenient access to crucial information about the air they breathe.
AQI card for Android and iOS
Update 10/21: After a short hiatus in August, Google is now broadly rolling out the AQI card in Discover on both iOS and Android devices. It is accessible through the Google app on the left side of the home screen. It’s important to note that AQI data is currently unavailable on Android tablets and the Pixel Fold, according to a report by 9to5Google.
As part of this update, Google has also revamped the Customize menu and replaced the Material You toggles with checkboxes. This measure aims to maintain a consistent visual user experience on both Android and iOS.
More than the weather
Original 8/10: In addition to the traditional search bar suggestions, Google Discover has long been known for providing users with a carousel of mini-cards covering a variety of topics, including:
- Finance: Stock prices and market trends relevant to the industries you follow
- Sports: Updates on the events of the teams you follow
- Weather: Current weather conditions based on your location
Now this configuration is accompanied by “Air quality information about your current location”. Users of the beta version of the Google app for Android (version 14.32) and iOS will notice a new card that, when tapped, provides the air quality index (AQI) and the corresponding color-coded point. It also contains information about where and when the data was collected.
Extended weather information
As part of this air quality boost, Google Discover in the app and on the left side of the home screen will move to a full-width weather map. Although it is largely similar to the compact version, the expanded card now also includes weather conditions and the probability of rain.
This weather extension provides users with added convenience, making it easier to stay up-to-date with local conditions.
With the air quality feature and settings switch already available in the Customize menu, it’s clear that Google is gearing up to quickly solve the blank card problem and ensure a seamless user experience.
