Google is experimenting with a new design for the search bar on Android, incorporating material 3 elements for a more consistent look.
Google is once again making changes to the design of its app for Android users. The latest update includes a new bottom search bar redesign, which was first introduced in 2021 and then updated in late 2023. This time, Google is experimenting with a Material 3 bottom bar redesign that includes an integrated search field.
A lucky user has come across this redesigned bottom bar while using Google Search on Android. This update includes Material 3 elements, including the pill-shaped tab indicator that was previously seen on the iOS version but was abandoned after a brief appearance on Android. The reintroduction of these design elements aims to improve the consistency of the Google app across platforms, 9to5Google reports.
Improved search experience: addressing user concerns
Above the bottom bar is a tall search box that used to be exclusively at the top of the Discover feed. In the current redesign, this search field remains visible even on the search results page, although some users find its size a bit exaggerated. Despite potential concerns about space usage, the redesign eliminates the need for the “Google” logo at the top and replaces it with instant access to search filters.
The default blue hue replaces the Dynamic Color feature, providing a clearer contrast on the search results page. Overall, this redesign of the lower search bar gives the Google app a fresher and more modern look, addressing concerns about its outdated look.
Monetization of Creative Search (SGE)
In other news, Google is considering monetizing its Search Generative Experience (SGE) feature. Launched almost a year ago, SGE offers users an artificial intelligence-based search experience. Although initially available through Search Labs, recent reports suggest that Google is exploring options to include certain AI-powered search features in premium subscription services.
This change would make SGE part of the $19.99 Google One AI Premium tier alongside Gemini Advanced. However, Google assures that there are no plans to remove ads from standard Google search. A decision on whether to launch this subscription-based model is still pending, and Google executives are considering various options, including offering certain SGE features to free users.
