Google Likely To Postpone Release of Its Own Processor For Pixel Smartphones Until 2025
According to The Information, Google has decided to postpone the launch of a completely customized chip for its Pixel smartphones until 2025, as reported by two individuals who are knowledgeable about the situation.
According to the report, Google originally planned to release the chip, internally called Redondo, next year to replace the semi-custom chips it is currently designing with Samsung Electronics.
According to The Information, the technology giant will also move from Samsung to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co (TSMC) to manufacture chips called Tensors.
The world’s largest contract chip manufacturer counts companies like Apple and Nvidia among its customers.
Google did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment, while TSMC declined to comment.
Google will stick with Samsung for another year and wait until 2025 to launch a fully custom design chip, internally codenamed Laguna, according to The Information.
The Laguna chip is based on TSMC’s 3-nanometer manufacturing process, which is currently the world’s most advanced chip manufacturing process, the report added.
