Google NotebookLM Enhances Chatbot Interaction
During the Google I/O event held in May, the company announced its strong commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) by introducing various advancements like PaLM 2, Bard, and several intelligent enhancement features for its wide range of products. Among these announcements, Google briefly mentioned Project Tailwind, an experimental product designed specifically for students as an “AI-first notebook” to assist them in staying organized. Recently, on Wednesday, Project Tailwind progressed from its development phase and transformed into NotebookLM (NLM).
NLM is essentially note-taking software with a large language model stuck on the side, “paired with your existing content to get critical insights faster.” Basically, it’s a chatbot that’s constantly tuned to your specific data set, so when you ask it a question, it’s only based on that data and not the collective knowledge of what the underlying model is built on. This “source grounding” ensures that the virtual assistant stays on topic and provides more relevant answers.
This virtual assistant can do all the normal chatbot tasks, including summarizing recently added documents, answering questions in depth from a text corpus, and generating new content from data. NLM is immediately available to a small group of beta testers in the US to provide feedback for further development, although there is no word yet on when it will be available to the general public. If you want to try it early yourself, sign up for the waiting list.
