Google Photos now lets you set “Memories” as your live wallpaper for your phone
Google Photos has a new update which allows you to set new live wallpapers in the “Memories” section. This will activate an auto-updating live wallpaper that will select photos from your Google Photos memories.
The new feature was rolled out with version 5.22 of Google Photos and is available for download from the Google Play Store. This basically adds a new Memories section under live wallpapers on Android smartphones. Select this option to extract photos from your Google Photos memories and the carousel will update regularly.
Google uses machine learning to select photos and videos from previous years for its Memories section. These photos and videos appear above the Google Photos app in an Instagram Stories-like interface. Just as Google chooses photos for Memories, live wallpapers will also update automatically. There is an option to “Open Photos” before choosing Memories from Google Photos, but selecting that option doesn’t offer any customization options, the XDA developers noted.
This is a small update, but it can be useful for people who are bored with their current wallpaper collection. It’s also not all bad to see your memories as the first thing to do when you open your phone.
Another small Google Photos update recently rolled out was new collage designs. Your recent highlights will now appear in new colorful collage designs from the simple template Google Photos always displays.
The small changes come as part of Google’s bigger move to turn off free backup to Google Photos. As of June 2021, all uploads to Google Photos will count towards your free 15 GB storage space. Photos and videos uploaded up to that point will still be available to all users.
