Google Pixel 8 Series To Receive Android OS Updates For Up To 7 Years: Here’s What We Know
The Pixel 8 series will be the next main focus of the tech industry in October, as Google looks to compete with the new iPhone 15 series in its own way. Reports have suggested that Google could finally match the iPhones in terms of the number of OS updates that the Pixel phones receive.
In fact, earlier this week it was hinted that the Pixel 8 series could receive up to 7 OS updates, taking it from Android 14 to Android 21 and easily beating the number of iOS versions received by a single iPhone.
But now things have been clarified by the tipper of this report that the Pixel 8 series will get 7 years of updates, which could mean that the new Pixel 8 phones will get 4 OS updates and three years of security updates, or vice versa.
Google has followed Apple’s strategy by feeding its Pixel phones a custom Tensor chip, which has its own problems. But a 7 year OS update would have beaten both Apple and even Samsung in that regard. Some reports have even suggested that Google could change the update policy for all Tensor-powered Pixel phones introduced with the Pixel 6 series. People have been asking Google to make drastic changes to its software policy so that Pixel phones can age better and retain their value in the market.
Apple has offered 5 iOS updates for iPhones since its inception, and Samsung has changed its strategy over the past few years, which has paid big dividends. It’s time for Google to follow these two brands and serve the premium segment with better support for the devices.
The new Pixel 8 series and Pixel Watch 2 will be released on the 4th. October in New York, and the India release is apparently confirmed for October 5, according to recently spotted online teasers.
