HMD Global To Launch Smartphones Under New Brand Name
Nokia’s Android phone manufacturers are now producing devices under the new brand name. The company’s CEO shared this update in a post this week, confirming that the new brand will be on the market alongside Nokia. It seems that HMD Global had a six-year exclusive partnership to make Nokia-branded phones, and according to the statement here, the company is now free to make its own branded phones.
Interestingly, HMD Global has not revealed details about the new brand and when the new phones will be launched. The company received a brand license to use Nokia and manufacture smartphones.
HMD Global has trusted Foxconn to manufacture Nokia’s Android smartphones and it is likely that the new brand will also use the same manufacturer to manufacture the phones. HMD Global was founded by former Nokia executives with the aim of rebranding and bringing Android phones to market.
We’ve seen numerous Nokia phones at various price points that have shown promise, but none have really managed to capture a large chunk of the market. Even in countries like India, Nokia phones have mainly focused on the budget and mid-range segments with a few premium flagships that have proven their versatility and innovation.
It wasn’t long ago that Nokia and Zeiss Optics had a solid partnership to deliver quality cameras to phones, but the latter has now moved on to Vivo where it has been working on premium camera phones. Nokia has stopped making flagship phones, so the end of the tie-up didn’t really surprise people.
HMD Global has been upfront about its plans and strategy, talking about the need to make affordable 5G phones and paying special attention to sustainability by using environmentally friendly materials. We have seen mostly Nokia C and G series phones launched in the last 12 months. We are now waiting to see if the brand will take a new direction with its new phone series.
