Honor Unveils Flagship Phone With Eye-Tracking Technology
It’s pretty rare to see phone reveals that do something truly different — whether it’s the Soli radar when Google launched the Pixel 4, or the Dynamic Island that debuted with the iPhone 14 Pro. And now the Honor Magic 6 has caught our attention with its ability to track your eyes and control apps.
Yes, Honor’s latest flagship — unveiled at Qualcomm’s Snapdragon Summit — lets you control it with your eyes. Honor calls it the “Magic Capsule”, and in the technology demo presented by the brand, we can observe a woman interacting with the Uber app. When he changes his gaze, the app opens completely.
According to Honor, the tech includes “eye-tracking-based multimodal interaction,” and it certainly looks promising based on the demo. However, it remains to be seen how functional this could be in real life and what kind of interactions app makers can come up with – especially for such a niche product.
Previously, we saw Google beefing up the Pixel 4 with a military-grade Soli Radar. It’s safe to say that despite the initial promise of being able to control the device with hand gestures – the technology never took off, with Google ending support for the next generation when the Pixel 5 launched. Here’s hoping that Honor could bring a different experience that remains functional.
Notably, Honor also revealed other details about the Honor Magic 6. Like some other upcoming flagships like the iQOO 12 and the OnePlus 12 that feature the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3, the Honor Magic 6 also packs this powerful chipset.
Additionally, the Honor Magic 6 gets a fair share of generative AI support thanks to Qualcomm’s on-board Large Language Model (LLM) integration. The primary use is to create AI videos; You can create fast videos with this technique when you send prompts to the YOYO assistant. “Users can easily create short videos from photos and footage stored on their devices. The templates, themes and music of the created videos can also be customized with additional prompts for personalized results,” notes Honor.
Honor has yet to give us a release date or even a window; so it may be a while before we see the phone land in people’s hands.
In related news, Honor made a comeback to the Indian market last month when it launched the Honor 90, an upper mid-range device. It has a 6.7-inch quad-curved AMOLED display with a 120 Hz refresh rate. It has a Snapdragon 7 Gen 1 chipset with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 256GB of inbuilt UFS 3.1 storage.
