Increase in Generative AI Job Postings in the US in May Revealed by Data
According to data from job portal Indeed, there was a 20% increase in job postings related to Generative AI in the United States last month. This surge in job postings is due to companies seeking to utilize a technology that has been widely recognized as the next major growth driver.
May’s figure of 204 million per job posting was also more than double the 2021 level and underscored the buzz around AI fueled by the runaway success of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Data scientist roles accounted for 5% of Indeed U.S. – platform artificial intelligence job announcements, and also the roles of software engineer, machine learning engineer and data engineer were in demand.
“Job seekers’ interest in AI-related jobs has increased significantly, especially since the introduction of ChatGPT,” says Nick Bunker, director of economic research at Indeed.
The jump comes at a time when the broader tech job market is under pressure due to mass layoffs at companies such as Meta Platforms and Amazon.com Inc., which are tightening their belts to survive an uncertain economy.
Overall, tech jobs in the U.S. are down 43.6 percent since June of last year, Indeed said, adding that the increase in available AI jobs has not matched the interest of job seekers.
Data from Indeed showed that searches for generative AI jobs rose to 147 per million job applications in May, up from virtually zero a year earlier.
Its US website displayed generative AI job postings from companies such as Meta Platforms, Apple, Tiktok, Pinterest and Amazon.com.
