Indian Government Issues Warning for Chrome Users on Windows and Mac Due to Significant Security Concern
At the beginning of the year, there will be a security warning for Chrome users, especially if you use it on a Windows PC or Mac. Government of India has issued this warning if you are using older and outdated version of Google Chrome browser on your systems. The alert has a high severity rating by India’s Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and a date stamp of January 9.
This is what the security warning says: Several vulnerabilities have been reported in Chrome that could be exploited by remote attackers to compromise a target system.
For those struggling to understand the issue, the warning clearly indicates a security issue in a Chrome component that could give an attacker remote access to your system.
The CERT-In bulletin provides more information about the problem: “These vulnerabilities exist in Google Chrome due to a buffer overflow in ANGLE, after using ANGLE, WebAudio, and WebGPU bug. A remote attacker could exploit these vulnerabilities by persuading a victim to visit a specially crafted web page.”
The security issue affects these versions of Chrome on Windows and MacOS:
– Google Chrome versions 120.0.6099.199 earlier for Mac and Linux users
– Google Chrome versions 120.0.6099.199/200 earlier for Windows users
Chrome users get these warnings regularly, which is just the data security agency informing millions of users in India. Most of these issues have already been fixed and even here, you can just update the Chrome browser on your PC or Mac to protect yourself from these potential attacks.
