Is Instagram Launching a New Platform? Evidence of Rival App Threads Found on Google Play
There are rumors circulating that Instagram is planning to introduce a text-based social media platform similar to Twitter, called ‘Threads’. Recently, a person named Alessandro Paluzzi shared on Twitter that Instagram had released the Threads app on the Google Play Store. Although the app is no longer available on the store, Paluzzi provided some screenshots that allegedly offer a sneak peek into the app’s features.
So how do threads differ from Twitter? What features does it bring?
The biggest change expected from Threads is that it will become “… a platform that is run sensibly,” The Verge quoted a top executive as telling employees. Given that Twitter has been on a rollercoaster ride for years and doesn’t seem to be ending, this is sure to be a key differentiator.
Instagram Threads: Everything We Know About It So Far
According to a leaked image of Paluzzi’s Threads app description, it’s a place where “communities come together to discuss everything from what’s important today to what’s trending tomorrow.” It might sound similar to Twitter, but a leaked description of Threads revealed that users can follow “and connect with their favorite creators and others who love the same things — or build your loyal following to share ideas, opinions, and creativity with the world.”
Screenshots of the store’s information page suggest that users can log into Threads with their Instagram account. Your most important information such as followers, handles, personal information and confirmations are transferred easily. You might even be able to follow the same accounts you follow on Instagram. Additionally, the tipster revealed that Threads lets you attach files with a paperclip-like icon. Although other elements like liking, reposting, replying and sharing are similar to Twitter.
It should be noted that Meta Platforms has not officially confirmed the name or the application. However, the rapid pace of leaks and the proposed listing on the Play Store point to its imminent release.
