iPad’s Final Countdown: Apple To Replace LCD With OLED In 2024
Apple may be planning to replace the current 12.9-inch iPad Pro with a mini-LED display and introduce a new 13-inch OLED model in 2024. As a result, the current model will be discontinued, according to Taiwanese research firm Trendforce.
This means that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro may be removed from the range entirely and not offered at a lower price. This is especially so after Apple hasn’t released an iPad during 2023.
“Mini LED portable delivery volumes are estimated to decrease by approximately 39% year-on-year. At the same time that the 12.9-inch iPad Pro is expected to be discontinued in 2024, shipments of Mini LED tablets are expected to decline by approximately 15.6% year-over-year, making these the only two applications expected to decline,” Trendforce reported.
With the transition to OLED panels, iPads are expected to consume less power and offer a better viewing experience than miniLED. Analyst Ross Young has also mentioned that Apple could use thin hybrid OLED displays, which could lead to a redesigned, slimmer form factor.
In addition, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has mentioned that Apple will release updated iPad Pro models in 11-inch and 13-inch sizes with new OLED panels, switching to the Apple M3 3nm chipset and a new Magic Keyboard.
The release date of these OLED models in 2024 remains to be seen. However, after 2023 passed without new releases, Mark Gurman announces that the entire iPad lineup will be renewed next year. This could include updated versions of the iPad mini, iPad Air, and perhaps even the next version of the 10th generation iPad.
