iPhone 17 to Begin Manufacturing Outside of China for the First Time as Part of Make in India Initiative

In a major boost to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Make In India’ initiative, US tech giant Apple plans to begin New Product Introduction (NPI) for the regular iPhone 17 in India. This means that Apple will start the development process of a new iPhone outside of China for the first time.

According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, demonstration production of the standard iPhone 17 will begin in India in the second half of 2025. The company chooses to assemble the standard iPhone 17 in India because of its lower level of difficulty. design that minimizes risk.

The Cupertino-based tech giant has been developing older iPhones and other devices in India for several years in an effort to move more of its production out of China.

Apple has slowly started to give factories in India more responsibility and started production of the iPhone 14 in the country just a few weeks after the device was launched in September 2022. Ming-Chi Kuo also revealed that 12-14 percent of global iPhone shipments come from India, and this share is expected to rise to 20-25 percent by 2024.

India’s Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology Rajeev Chandrasekhar praised Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s PLI scheme and said, “Within just two and a half years, Tata Companies will start manufacturing iPhones in India for the domestic and global markets.”
