Joe Biden Urges Action To Address Potential Dangers of Artificial Intelligence to Security and Economy
On Tuesday, President Joe Biden emphasized the importance of addressing the potential threats posed by artificial intelligence to both the economy and national security, and expressed his intention to seek guidance from experts.
“My administration is committed to protecting the rights and safety of the American people while protecting privacy, addressing misinformation and misinformation, ensuring that AI systems are safe before they are released,” Biden said at an event in San Francisco.
Biden met with a group of civil society leaders and advocates who have previously criticized the influence of big tech companies to discuss artificial intelligence.
“I wanted to hear directly from the experts,” he said.
Several governments are considering how to mitigate the dangers of the emerging technology, as investment and consumer interest has increased in recent months following the release of OpenAI’s ChatGPT.
Biden’s meeting on Tuesday was attended by Center for Humane Technology director Tristan Harris, Algorithmic Justice League founder Joy Buolamwini and Stanford University professor Rob Reich.
Regulators worldwide have been trying to set rules for the use of generative artificial intelligence, which can create text and images and whose impact has been compared to the Internet.
Biden has also recently discussed AI with other world leaders, including British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, whose government is hosting the first global summit on AI security later this year. Biden is expected to discuss the issue with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his ongoing visit to the United States.
European Union lawmakers last week agreed on changes to draft rules on artificial intelligence proposed by the European Commission, aiming to set a global standard for the technology used in everything from automated factories to self-driving cars to chatbots.
